My
favorite part of the vacation home business is to find a
fixer upper and make it into a showplace. I have done this
(with my husband's real estate nose and hard work) with Betsy's
Bungalow & Rio Haus. We started with a vacant lot and
an ancient cabin next door they wanted to get rid of. We
moved the ancient cabin over to our side and discovered a
fabulous Sears Cottage from the 1950s! Hence, our 50s theme
with Marilyn Monroe in every room acting as my muse. We added
the new Bungalow in the winter of 2004.
 The secret to renting
these houses out is mine. I will share my experience and
skill with you if you find a home you would like to develop.
Be prepared to spend what it takes to make
your place unique. We have a wonderful crew of affordable
expert workers that
can make it all happen!
Deep Water Inn is our latest project. It indeed needed a
miracle. A large older home, full of yappy dogs and not well
maintained. We added a wall creating two new bedrooms and
a bathroom. I sewed some of the curtains myself and had such
fun! It has the feel of coming home to comfy retreat full
of vintage collectibles. Each room is a different color and
feel. We finished up with landscaping and an outdoor kitchen.
It has rented very well at $700 a night all summer.
I am tackling the house next to Deep Water which is being
built this winter. I cannot wait!
